Trump's Power Faces Major Test After Midterm Setback as Impeachment Debate Looms

Trump's Republican Party has suffered a major setback in the US midterm elections, raising questions over his legislative agenda, India-US trade deal, foreign policy and the possibility of impeachment.

Donald Trump's political power could face significant challenges after his Republican Party suffered a setback in the US midterm elections. Losing its majority in both chambers of Congress does not mean Trump will suddenly become powerless, but it could make governing considerably more difficult for his administration. In American politics, such a situation is known as a 'divided government', in which Congress is controlled by different political parties.

According to research by Princeton University, the chances of passing important legislation decrease by approximately 30% under a divided government. The failure rate of major presidential initiatives increases by 45%, up to 75% of major national issues remain stalled, and congressional investigations into the White House double or even triple. This is why midterm election results can significantly affect a president's political influence, even when his position remains secure.

Congress plays a central role in the American system of government, as it is responsible for making laws and approving government spending. If the opposition party gains control of Congress, several of Trump's major policy priorities, including taxation, trade, immigration and domestic policies, could face resistance in the legislature. The opposition could block proposals, demand changes or keep them pending for extended periods.

Trump Still Retains Presidential Powers: What Options Does He Have?

Although Trump has lost the majority in both chambers of Congress, he will retain several important constitutional powers as president. He can issue executive orders, continue serving as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, exercise considerable influence over foreign policy and veto legislation passed by Congress.

The White House has also been preparing for this possibility for some time. According to reports, Trump's team has been working on alternative strategies that would allow the president to advance parts of his agenda through executive powers, even without congressional cooperation.

The administration has also received briefings on strategies to deal with potential congressional investigations, subpoenas and demands for documents.

India-US Trade Deal and Other Key Issues Could Face Hurdles

Challenges could also increase on the foreign policy front. Congress's position could become particularly important on issues such as the India-US trade agreement, assistance to Ukraine, support for Israel in the Middle East and matters concerning Iran.

The opposition's majority could put additional pressure on the White House, particularly when a policy requires additional funding or legislative approval. In such circumstances, Trump may have to rely on political compromises and negotiations to move forward with several of his decisions.

What Happens If Trump Faces Impeachment?

One of the biggest discussions following the midterm elections could revolve around impeachment proceedings against Trump. However, impeachment does not mean that a president is immediately removed from office. The process in the United States involves two stages.

The first stage takes place in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress. An impeachment resolution is introduced there. If it passes with a simple majority, the president is formally impeached.

The matter then moves to the Senate, where a trial is conducted. Removing the president from office requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate. This is the biggest obstacle in the impeachment process. If the opposition does not have sufficient numbers or some lawmakers refuse to support the proposal, the president can remain in office even after being impeached.

Could Trump's Presidency Actually Be at Risk?

In theory, yes. However, removing Trump from office would be difficult in practice. Passing an impeachment resolution in the House of Representatives alone is not enough to remove a president. The final decision rests with the Senate, where securing two-thirds support is considered an extremely difficult challenge.

Therefore, although the midterm election setback could weaken Trump's ability to push through his legislative agenda and increase scrutiny of his administration, his presidential powers would remain intact. The extent of the political challenge will depend on how Congress exercises its authority and whether the administration can secure support for its key priorities.
